Momentum of the Muse Series
Below) In Stereo was Part 1 of the series. A possession of the past. When Sadiqua Iman entered the installation of “Night of the Stereotypes” by Carletta Carrington Wilson at Wa Na Wa Ri, she had no idea the response would be so visceral. Wilson’s art interrogates stereotypical images of African Americans from the late 19th to early 20th century. In the next installment of Momentum of the Muse, Sadiqua allows the energy of her southern upbringing and love for watermelon to fuel a disturbing dance/theatre performance placed within the exhibition. As a viewer, Sadiqua asks you to wrestle with your beliefs of what fuels stereotypes, and what happens when those stereotypes are embodied in the 21st century. Is it harmful, or empowering...and to who?
